Day 2: Part II- Black Sand Beach and Volcano

Arriving at the Black Sand Beach

Beautiful sand beach. not so beautiful bus tourists

Sea turtle! Perhaps one of my favorite parts of the trip

And one more further down the beach

Someone had to check the temp in the pool
There was a lovely lagoon behind the beach

mysterious waterfowl

Why, it's a coconut!

Here we are at the steam vents!

Our first stop in Volcano National Park (after getting our passport stamped)
ekk

The weather was great, but a bit windy
This walk reminded me of Yellowstone (which is still my favorite park)

Our tiny residence for the night- former training camp turned internment camp in WWII (I could have gone without knowing that fact). But at least there was a coffee shop and a cheap breakfast in the am!

Motel blanket, check!
They look fake, but they're real

Cody was quite excited about the Thurston Lava Tube

The second (unlight) half of the tube was closed to visitors (bummer).
