Day 6: Snorkeling & Whales II

Cody and I picked a more successful snorkeling spot Saturday morning (apparently the best time to snorkel). The tide-pool like area was  a little crowded, but what an experience! It made me somewhat anxious, especially when we swam over coral or eels, but it was amazing the amount of different fish we saw! It was incredible! We left the beach in time to make it back to the port for Whale Watch part deux. Saturday was MUCH more successful than Friday. It was phenomenal! We counted about 30 whale breaches and about as many tail slaps (we're pretty sure we witnesses a heat run, or the actions before mating, but we'll never know). It was a great day out in the bay...
Our snorkeling beach (unfortunately we didn't have an underwater camera)

We got there just at the right time to get a parking spot and just before it got very busy

changed and ready to head back to the pier
At the Kona pier, ready to depart on round 2

The 70 foot catamaran

We settled in on the top dock for trip numero deux
The first spot: a blow and a 'footprint' as they're called

Blow and tail- You could hear the 'boom' of the tail slap- listen closely to the video clip below

My very favorite picture (how wonderful to have a camera with great zoom)
Missed that one- it was a little difficult to spot them, since boats had to stay 100 yards away from the whales and could not come from behind them

Another breach (it was basically just point, click and hope that the picture caught some of the action)
Dorsal fin (I had to put the camera away shortly after this so I could enjoy the views without worrying about getting a picture- it was so amazing!)

Fin & a fluke (meaning they were heading down for a dive;  they could stay under for up to 30 minutes, calves less of course)
Loving this cruise
To top off a perfect day, we headed back to Huggo's for happy hour

Toes in the sand :)

And drink in hand

We split a pork sandwich
And three minutes later...

Last penny press of the trip

We found Kua Bay, and even spotted three groups of blows on the way to the beach!

Ready for some bogey (but little did he know...)
Beautiful beach!

Proof that I could bogey too

We planned to catch a wonderful sunset, but it was a bit cloudy

And there it goes
Licking his wounds (Cody got a little too eager and ended up getting tossed around in the waves!)

We grilled some steaks and veggies for dinner
A little out of order, but we enjoyed some coconut ice cream for dessert

Said dinner, including brocciflower
